Seismic Rally Aug. 3: Making noise to protect dolphins, whales, ocean fish
Front of Waterside Festival Marketplace, 333 Waterside Drive, Norfolk, VA

A Deaf Whale is a Dead Whale!

Seismic airgun testing will injure or kill an estimated
138,500 dolphins and whales in the Atlantic, to include
the endangered North Atlantic Right Whale
- only about 500 of which remain.

Join Oceana and Sierra Club for a RALLY against SEISMIC AIRGUNS!

Join us in making a lot of noise simulating (to a very small extent) the proposed dynamite-like blasts that are 100,000x louder than a jet engine, continue every 10 seconds, 24/7 for weeks on end, over 100s of acres of ocean water.  Bring ear plugs!

WHEN: Sat., Aug. 3, 12:00 to 1:30 pm
WHERE: Front of Waterside Festival Markets, 333 Waterside Drive, Norfolk, VA (Click here for map.)

What are seismic airguns?  Seismic airguns send compressed blasts of air shooting through the ocean to search for oil and gas deposits. The blasts are 100,000 times louder than a jet plane engine! The sound waves reflect back to the surface and are recorded to create a map of the ocean floor.

What are the risks to ocean life from seismic airgun testing? For animals who depend on hearing for survival, like marine mammals, seismic airguns are devastating. The US Government estimates that 138,500 whales and dolphins will be injured, deafened, or killed. The highly endangered North Atlantic right whale, which lives exclusively off the East Coast, is particularly at risk: only about 500 individuals remain, and all of them will be affected by seismic testing!

What are the risks to coastal economies? Seismic testing has been shown to displace economically valuable fish stocks—bad news for fishermen and the seafood industry! Add ocean-based tourism and recreation to fishing, and there are over 100,000 jobs (and billions of dollars in revenue) in Virginia that are directly dependent on the resources that seismic airguns threaten.Seismic airgun testing is devastating to marine life and risks the livelihoods and income of thousands of Virginians. In addition, the process paves the way for offshore drilling and the potential for massive catastrophes like the BP Deepwater Horizon explosion and spill. We don’t need seismic airguns or drilling in Virginia!
