Please help us honor outgoing Chair Dan Proctor, and celebrate former Director Jay McCaffrey's 20 years of environmental advocacy with an exceptional presentation entitled Climate Change Comes to Thoreau's Concord by Boston University's Richard Primack.
Thoreau was a
climate change scientist! For the past 10 years, Professor Richard Primack has been using Thoreau’s records to
document the dramatically earlier flowering and leafing out times of plants,
the earlier ice out at Walden Pond, and the response of migratory birds. And
most noteworthy, plants in Concord are also changing in abundance due to a
warming climate. This work, supported by beautiful photos and numerous quotes
from Thoreau, has received wide media attention,
most recently in the New York Times, and demonstrates the relevance of Thoreau’s
legacy to contemporary issues.
A reception with refreshments and cash bar will immediately follow the lecture.
