We have just days to persuade our elected officials to get dirty fuel's out of Maryland's clean energy programs.
For years, a loophole in Maryland's Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard (RPS) has sent millions of dollars to paper mills to burn a waste byproduct and dirty fuel called black liquor. Now, legislation to close this dirty fuel loophole and direct RPS funds to wind and solar is moving through the legislature. This coming Monday, Sierra Club activists will be visiting Annapolis to speak out for cleaning up Maryland's energy.* You can help amplify the message to close Maryland's dirty fuel loophole.
While states like Delaware and New Jersey get over 70% of their RPS energy from wind and solar, those sources have made up only 13% of Maryland's standard over the last seven years. Promoting authentic clean energy sources like wind and solar has the potential to bring thousands of new jobs to Maryland and clean up the air.
Lobbyists for out-of-state polluting industries have flooded Annapolis to try and prevent this bill from passing. Last year, the bill passed in the Senate by a 33-13 bipartisan vote, but it stalled in the house Economic Matters Committee. Help make sure it doesn't get stuck in committee again by emailing your legislators today.
Thanks for all you do to protect the environment,
Josh Tulkin

P.S. *RSVP for our grassroots lobby day in Annapolis to speak out for strengthening Maryland's clean energy policies!
