"The question is not whether climate change is happening or not, but whether, in the face of this emergency, we ourselves can change fast enough." –Kofi Annan

No April foolin' here! We hope you'll join us to tour a NET Zero energy home in Tucson!
One of the primary focuses of John Wesley Miller Companies is creating energy-efficient homes and businesses. In conjunction with Green Builder Media, one of this company's most recent projects is the Vision House®, a NET Zero energy home with a preliminary HERS rating of -17. John Wesley Miller will lead us on a tour of this home and will discuss in detail some of its energy-efficient features. This is a great opportunity to learn more about measures to implement in your own home or business, as well as what to look for when remodeling or purchasing a home! For more information and to RSVP, contact Tiffany Sprague at (602) 253-9140 or tiffany.sprague@sierraclub.org. NOTE: We will not have our regularly scheduled Energy Team gathering on March 25. To help celebrate Earth Day, we hope you'll join us for this film screening, hosted by Arizona State University's (ASU) Global Institute of Sustainability.
Chasing Ice is an award-winning documentary depicting the story of acclaimed National Geographic photographer James Balog and his mission to gather undeniable evidence of climate change. Using time-lapse cameras, Balog's videos compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate. After the film, Nick Brown (ASU's Director of University Sustainability Practices) and Ken Sweat (Senior Lecturer at ASU) will lead a discussion with the audience. You can learn more and register online. |

Tucson Electric Power (TEP) and Arizona Public Service (APS) announced their energy savings for 2013 last week. APS reported total energy savings of 539 GWh from its programs and TEP reported a total of 177 GWh, which was 165 percent more than the savings from the prior year. Energy efficiency -- the energy we don't use -- is the cheapest and cleanest energy resource and has significant environmental benefits. These energy savings translate into less pollution, less water use, and greater savings for utilities and customers. Recently, the Southwest Energy Efficiency Project (SWEEP), a public interest organization promoting greater energy efficiency in the Southwest, highlighted some of the success stories associated with these energy savings programs, including Art Ledner and his Green Energy Guys sales team at Inline Electrical Resources. Through their door-to-door efforts with businesses, they have completed 2,200 lighting efficiency upgrades since 2006. Since 2009, the upgrades have saved a total of 160 million kWh of electricity, which is enough electricity to power more than 11,000 homes for a year. In February, TEP recognized Inline Electrical Resources with a BrightEE award for its great energy efficiency work. Energy Tip O' the Day With temperatures warming up, it's the perfect time to limit use of your clothes dryer and use the power of the sun to dry your clothes instead! This will not only cut down on energy use and costs but will also reduce the amount of heat emitted into your home from using the dryer. |
