Bobcats Are Back! To be hunted? |
Dear Friend of Illinois Wildlife:
Something remarkable is happening across the Illinois countryside.
Thanks to the hard work and dedication of conservationists like you, the first large predators like cougars and wolves are returning to Illinois’ forests and river corridors. Biologists believe that black bears may not be far behind. Bobcats, recently de-listed as a threatened species, are rebuilding populations in some parts of the Prairie State.
I need your help to make sure Illinois welcomes these predators back to the Prairie State, where they belong.
These animals need our help. Last fall, a cougar was shot by the Department of Natural Resources after it was discovered in northwestern Illinois. We’re fighting a proposal in Springfield to open a hunting season on bobcats.
We need these predators back as key parts of a healthy ecosystem. They need us to do our part to welcome them back. Our volunteers and staff are working to pass legislation to protect cougars, wolves, and bears from being shot, and to stop the proposed hunting season on bobcats. Tell your legislators in Springfield to protect these animals.
Sierra Club has been working toward this day for over a half a century, protecting and restoring Illinois’ wild places. We’ve protected our Shawnee National Forest and precious state parks, and are fighting against fossil fuel extraction proposals that pose new threats. Sierra Club members like you have always been an essential part of our strength, and now we need your help to protect these animals.
Sincerely,
Jack Darin
Director
Sierra Club, Illinois Chapter
P.S. Previous generations drove large predators out of Illinois. Our generation has the chance to welcome them back. Let’s make the most of it – please make a gift today to support our volunteers and staff who are fighting in Springfield to protect them.
