Coming Soon: The People's Climate March!
The Sierra Club and the rest of the environmental community will rally in New York City on Sunday, September 21 to support action on climate change. Participants will march from near Central Park, just north of Columbus Circle, down to 11th Avenue and 34th Street. The start time is 11:30 a.m.
The Sierra Club is offering round-trip, low-cost bus service to Northern Virginia residents who want to join in the rally. We'll depart from the Vienna Metro Kiss-and-Ride at 6:45 a.m. on the 21st.
To reserve a spot on the bus visit the EventBrite page.
For more information on the march, visit the national Sierra Club web site.
Calling on Dominion: Time to Dump ALEC!
Eighty environmental activists joined Alexandria's mayor Bill Euille on September 4th to demand Virginia Dominion Power cease it support of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).
ALEC is an organization that supports anti-environmental legislation (like repeals of State renewable portfolio standard laws) and other extreme causes (such as voter suppression). At least 72 corporate funders have cut ties with the ALEC (http://www.ALECexposed.org) in the wake of the scandal over its pushing "Stand Your Ground" bills and restrictive voter ID laws that make it harder for Americans to vote.
The September 4 event was organized by the Mount Vernon Group's Climate Chair, Seth Heald, with co-sponsors the Chesapeake Climate Action Network, Greenpeace, Black Youth Project 100, Food & Water Watch, Oceana, Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions and Virginia Progress. For a complete rundown on the event, go to Seth's Sierra Club blog.
