What's in store this Earth Day?
Earth Day began in 1970 as a way to highlight concerns over human impact on the environment. It has grown to a worldwide celebration with over 500 million people participating in 2008.
Earth Day is a great time for Sierrans to celebrate successes, educate the public on environmental concerns, and highlight the Club’s dedication to protecting our air, water, and wild spaces. During the week of April 18th through April 25th, volunteers across North Carolina will organize and host events to celebrate our Earth. Sierra Club has two primary goals for this week: to educate the public on local environmental actions and to strengthen the skills of our volunteer base.
In our last issue, we highlighted what the Central Piedmont group would be up to. Here's what some other local groups will be doing.
Please consider volunteering with your local group and help spread the green word.
Cypress
The Cypress Group will partner with local organizations to plan Pitt County’s annual Green Fest. During the event, volunteers will hand-out coastal sea level rise information, Cool City Guides for Energy Savings, Pitt County Paddle Maps and other general Sierra Club information.

Foothills
The local Cool City group has designated a sub-group of volunteers to plan this year’s Earth Day. The group will hold a Photo Petition where passersby can write their preference for trees on a white board and then have their picture taken. These tree-hugging pictures will then be sent to Winston-Salem’s City Council to show public support for a local tree ordinance.
