Rhode Island Chapter - Sierra Club

April 15, 2009

Dear Friend,

Next Wednesday is Earth Day. And next Tuesday is Earth Day Lobby Day. Every year, the Environment Council of Rhode Island (ECRI), of which Sierra Club is a member, hosts Earth Day Lobby Day to give Rhode Island's "green" and "cool" constituency an opportunity to meet with their elected officials.
Another way to get your message about transportation choices and energy independence to your elected officials and their other constituents is by writing a letter to the editor. Write one today!

1) Come to Earth Day Lobby Day!

RI Earth Day Lobby DayEvery year, ECRI hosts the Earth Day Lobby Day to give voters an opportunity to educate their legislators about priority environmental legislation. ECRI will offer a quick-and-dirty lobby training at 2:30 pm followed by a rally. After the rally, we'll help you find your State Senator and Representative so you can tell them to support environmental laws. Sierra Club will have a table there to offer citizen lobbyist tool kit. So come on out!

Earth Day Lobby Day
Tuesday, April 21, 2009, 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Rhode Island State House (in the Rotunda)
Smith Street, Providence

2) CT Shifts from Highways to Transportation Choices

TrafficTrue story! Connecticut's new Director of Transportation is a public transit guy. For real! Read about it. Clearly, highway construction and maintenance in New England has sunk our communities into more and more debt over the years and chained us to a dangerous dependence on foreign oil. Giving residents real choices that are competitive with the automobile is the next step toward energy independence and climate protection.

Sadly, RI DOT and RIPTA are still squabbling over stimulus money. Read Bruce Landis' article>>>

3) What are Cool CATs?
Cool Cities
Cool CATs are the Sierra Club's Cool Cities Community Action Teams. Cool Cities or Cool Communities are those local governments that sign on to the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. Sierra Club Community Action Teams are teams of volunteer activists who work together to build environmental communities by hosting house parties, going door to door with our message, or participating in phone banks.

Get involved in a Cool CAT today!
Thank you for signing up for Cool CATs Weekly. Sierra Club volunteers are working in Newport, North Kingstown and Barrington to make one of those communities the next Cool City or Town. Feel free to contact us if you would like to make your city Cool.

Sincerely,

Chris Wilhite

Take Action!

The editorial pages of the newspaper are often the most widely-read pages of the paper, giving it a huge public audience. Decision-makers often read letters to the editor to get a sense of their constituencies' concerns.

You can help spread the Sierra Club's message of green transportation for the 21st Century by writing a letter to the editor.
