From the Chair |
This week, I will help my daughter move from Newton to North Attelboro, MA, so that she will be closer to her work. Why does she need my help and the help of her brother? It’s not just that we can save time by providing extra hands. There are basically some things that she simply cannot do as one person such as pick up and move some of her furniture. It will take several of us to carry some things from her old apartment to the van and from the van to her new apartment. There is a message here. There are some things we can accomplish as individuals, and some things that require a group effort. That’s why I support the Sierra Club as a volunteer and with monetary contributions. I do my best to lead an earth-friendly life-style, but I can’t have much impact on environmental policy as one individual. For that, I need to join other members of the Rhode Island Chapter to influence what happens in Rhode Island as we set priorities and focus on important issues, such as public transportation. But don’t forget our national Sierra Club organization! The national Sierra Club is taking on even broader issues with six important initiatives Beyond Coal, Curbing Carbon, Clean Energy Solutions, Green Transportation, Resilient Habitats, and Safeguarding Communities. For more information on these initiatives, go to http://www.sierraclub.org/ and click on “Goals.” My daughter can’t accomplish her residential move alone. Likewise, what you can accomplish for the environment as one individual is limited. By joining together with other members of the Rhode Island Chapter, you can accomplish things you could never do alone. And by supporting the national Sierra Club, you have the opportunity to help restore and protect our environment both nationally and globally. |
