Dear ,Friend,
Lots happened during Earth Week. But it's not over. You may be wondering, "now what do we do?" Come out to Spring for Transportation Choices on May 14th to find out how to get aboard. Or, click that "Take Action" button just to the right. Or get your friends to take action.
1) Spring for Transportation Choices, May 14th 7:00pm |
Are you enjoying the flowers as much as I am? I hope you are getting out to enjoy your favorite natural areas.
In the meantime, we thought we'd throw a spring party to give you the opportunity to jump aboard the Club's programs to expand our bus and bicycle system in Rhode Island. Oh, and it just happens to be during National Bicycle Week. And we'll be screening the film, Taken for a Ride.
Let us know you're coming!

2) Transit in the Earth Day Week of News |
Today's letter to the editor in the Providence Journal asks a fundamental question for Rhode Island: why would we invest in oil companies far away from Rhode Island instead of investing in transportation choices here? But even the finest transit systems in the country are grappling with that question.
With transit systems buckling under increased ridership, Congress is beginning to craft the next six-year Federal Transportation Policy. (Ironically, the Senate author got stuck in traffic for the announcement.) The last time that happened, the Bush administration and a Congress closely connected with K Street oil lobbyists invested more tax dollars in more runaway highways (remember the Bridge to Nowhere?) and less on clean, energy efficient transportation choices. |
3) 10 Minutes for Change? |
10 Minutes for Change is a weekly open house for activists every Wednesday at the Sierra Club. If you have 10 minutes or 2 hours to donate to help the Sierra Club get our work done, come on by. We'll have snacks, drinks and things to do. This week, we're making phone calls to members in key districts. So, come on by for 10 minutes or half an hour. |
4) What are Cool CATs? |
Cool CATs are the Sierra Club's Cool Cities Community Action Teams. Cool Cities or Cool Communities are those local governments that sign on to the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. Sierra Club Community Action Teams are teams of volunteer activists who work together to build environmental communities by hosting house parties, going door to door with our message, or participating in phone banks.
|
Thank you for signing up for Cool CATs Weekly. Sierra Club volunteers are working in Newport, North Kingstown and Barrington to make one of those communities the next Cool City or Town. Feel free to contact us if you would like to make your city Cool.
Sincerely,
Chris Wilhite Sierra Club Rhode Island Chapter |
