June 8, 2009
Dear ,Friend,
Well, the month of power... June is indeed the final month of the Rhode Island Legislative Session. This is the time to contact your legislators and remind them that if we want Rhode Island cities and towns to be "Cool", we need more cool, green transportation choices. We need to grow our public transit system to help reduce our dependence on cars and oil. We need better bicycle routes and safer streets so that bicycle commuting is a safe option. With such a small area to cover, there is no reason why Rhode Island shouldn't be a sustainable, energy independent state. And there is every reason why your city or town should be "Cool!"
1) The Final Count Down... |
The Rhode Island General Assembly only has six legislative days left. Of course they can extend the clock on those days. In fact we may see the actual last day of session in early July. Nevertheless, there is not a lot of time left to pass a state budget that is committed to growing public transportation in Rhode Island.
Send a message to your Legislators today! Or if you already have, tell your friends to. |
2) Host a House Party (with our new tool) |
The Sierra Club Rhode Island Chapter has a new tool to help you organize a house party.
House parties all over America have been the driving force of changing our energy future. With the advantage of Rhode Island's small size, a slew of House Parties can tip the scales to establish a green transportation system for the 21st Century.

3) What are CoolCATs? |
Cool CATs are the Sierra Club's Cool Cities Community Action Teams. Cool Cities or Cool Communities are those local governments that sign on to the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. Sierra Club Community Action Teams are teams of volunteer activists who work together to build environmental communities by hosting house parties, going door to door with our message, or participating in phone banks. |
Thank you for signing up for Cool CATs Weekly. Excitingly, Cranston this year joined Pawtucket, Providence, and Warwick as a "Cool" city! Nevertheless, there are still only these four "Cool" cities in Rhode Island. Sierra Club volunteers are working in Newport, North Kingstown and Barrington to make one of those communities the next Cool City or Town. Feel free to contact us if you would like to make your city Cool.
Sincerely,
Chris Wilhite Sierra Club Rhode Island Chapter |

Urge the General Assembly to Grow Transportation Choices in Rhode Island
Creating more transportation choices will generate new transit jobs, give Rhode Islanders access to greater diversity of job opportunities, cut global warming pollution from single-occupancy cars, protect open spaces by encouraging smarter residential and commercal growth, and reduce imported oil, making the Ocean State more energy independent.
