100 Coal Plants Unplugged
Last week saw a milestone for the Sierra Club's Beyond Coal Campaign: the 100th coal plant abandoned or defeated when Utah’s Intermountain Power ended plans for another unit at its coal-fired facility in the state.
"We are witnessing a remarkable transformation toward a cleaner, healthier, more secure future," said Bruce Nilles, Director of the Sierra Club's Beyond Coal Campaign.
"At the beginning of the coal rush in 2001, it seemed inevitable that as many as 150 new proposed coal plants would get built. Since then we've seen an incredible change in the way people, businesses and governments are thinking about energy, figuring out how to generate and use it more cleanly and efficiently. Coal is no longer a smart or cost-effective option. We can create jobs and electricity through clean energy technology made in America."

Energy Bill Postponed in Senate
The word came down late last week that the Senate will be postponing its energy bill mark-up and release until September. This announcement came after an eventful hearing on energy and climate legislation in the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee last Tuesday.
Our campaign for clean energy is far from over -- stay tuned and get involved to make sure the U.S. moves quickly toward a clean energy economy and lowering our global warming pollution.
Global Warming and…Sheep?
Add this to the list of things we may not have thought would be affected by global warming: sheep size. Researchers in London have done the work on this, and it looks like sheep are getting smaller.
Let the puns begin!
