Rhode Island Chapter - Sierra Club

July 30, 2009

Dear Friend,

Here's what's in this week's edition of CoolCATs Weekly:

1) Better Transportation Choices for Aquidneck Island?

2) Action Alert: Contact RIPTA

1) Better Transportation Choices for Aquidneck Island?

RI Aquid VideoYesterday, the Aquidneck Island Planning Commission launched a two-year Multi-modal Transportation Study that they say will be a comprehensive study on all modes of transportation on the Island. Our vision is that it will include clean, affordable transportation choices that help solve global warming, reduce our dependence on oil, and make our Aquidneck Island communities more livable. Check out the story on Channel 10.

A statewide transportation plan should connect Rhode Islanders to the economic centers of the state and make those centers more oriented to transit, bicycles and pedestrians. Aquidneck Island is one of those centers. With the Obama administration, we have an opportunity to revolutionize our transportation system to move us into the 21st Century New Energy Economy.

2) So, where is the new RIPTA Service???

Bus and BikerAt community meetings and one-on-one conversations with our members and supporters, we keep hearing about how RIPTA's public information is not promoted. How do we stand a chance solving global warming by encouraging people to use public transit if our Transit Authority doesn't distribute the information?

In a world of email, Facebook, TV, and radio, you'd think RIPTA would use its media megaphone to let Rhode Islanders know about the good service it provides.

Tell RIPTA General Manager Al Moscola to get with the program and use effective modern marketing to promote public transit in Rhode Island!

3) What are CoolCATs?
Cool Cities Cool CATs are the Sierra Club's Cool Cities Community Action Teams. Cool Cities or Cool Communities are those local governments that sign on to the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. Sierra Club Community Action Teams are teams of volunteer activists who work together to build environmental communities by hosting house parties, going door to door with our message, or participating in phone banks.
Thank you for signing up for Cool CATs Weekly. You can make your community "Cool" by advocating for renewable power, green buildings and transportation choices. Visit the Cool Cities website for resources and toolkits.

Sincerely,

Chris Wilhite

Take Action!

Tell RIPTA to do the PR!

RIPTA has new service in places all over Rhode Island, including Aquidneck Island. But how would you know? Tell them to do the PR so that people know where to catch the best bus!

Check out what's going on!
