Dear Friend,
Now that our Summer hiatus is over, here's what's in this week's edition of CoolCATs Weekly:
1) Grassroots for Green Routes!
2) South County Commuter Rail News
| 1) Green Routes for RI Communities |
|
Now that your've 'greened' up your home, what's the next step to reaching the goal that the world's scientists have set for us? Make your Routes green!
Did you know that driving is the number one source of global warming emissions in Rhode Island? Not only do we need greener vehicles, we need greener routes!
Fortunately, communities in Rhode Island, including Providence and Aquidneck Island are working to design better transportation choices, like streetcars and rapid transit, safer bicycle commuting lanes and crosswalks, as well as more walkable neighborhoods.
Wanna do something for Green Routes in your community?
Well, the Number-One way to build a grassroots movement is to talk to your friends and neighbors. Invite them over to your house and start the discussion. It's easiest if you make it potluck. Add some fun in with some popcorn by screening the film, Taken for a Ride. |
| 2) South County Commuter Rail: One more obstacle overcome! |
|
Last Thursday, the Massachusetts-Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) okayed extending service from Providence to T.F. Green Airport and Wickford Junction. This is good news bringing transportation choices to South County.
Meanwhile, the MBTA is working to "green" its commuter rail fleet with new, diesel-electric trains (the locomotive term for "hybrid"). |
| 3) What are CoolCATs? |
Cool CATs are the Sierra Club's Cool Cities Community Action Teams. Cool Cities or Cool Communities are those local governments that sign on to the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. Sierra Club Community Action Teams are teams of volunteer activists who work together to build environmental communities by hosting house parties, going door to door with our message, or participating in phone banks. |
Thank you for signing up for Cool CATs Weekly. You can make your community "Cool" by advocating for renewable power, green buildings and transportation choices. Visit the Cool Cities website for resources and toolkits. Sincerely, Chris Wilhite Sierra Club Rhode Island Chapter |
