Grassroots for Green Routes by Chris Wilhite
If we are going to meet the goal of cutting carbon 80% by 2050 in order to save our coastlines from the worst effects of global warming, then we need transportation choices. Fuel efficiency will not meet that goal alone. By the end of next year, the future of transportation choices will be in the hands of Rhode Islanders.
This is the time to make it happen! The Transportation Choices 2020 Campaign is rolling ahead with the momentum of a locomotive. This fall, Providence Mayor David Cicilline's vision, Transit 2020, will lay new tracks as the Metro Area Transit Study will be released. At the same time, the Aquidneck Island Transportation Study will have its first in a series of public meetings to gain the input of residents on what transportation choices out to look like on the Island.
So the Rhode Island Chapter is launching a mini-campaign called Green Routes. The Sierra Club's strength is its ability to organize at the local level and build a movement of change.
Cesar Chavez, the leader of the United Farm Workers said, "The only way I know how to organize people is to talk to one person, then talk to another person, then talk to another person." Cesar Chavez started by hosting a house party.
One house at a time, we can turn the direction of Rhode Island and ride toward the future.
Host a house party for Green Routes!

Aquidneck Island Transportation Study - First Public Workshop
Tuesday, September 29, 2009 6:00 - 9:00 pm Middletown Town Hall Council Chamber
Message from the Governor's Office:
"AIPC's newest project, the Transportation Study, was officially launched on July 29th at the former John F. Kennedy School in Middletown, next to the roar of traffic that is its focus. Governor Donald L. Carcieri, Rhode Island Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed, Federal Highway Administration Division (FHWA) Administrator Peter Osborn, Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) Director Michael Lewis and Department of Administration Statewide Planning Program (SPP) Kevin Flynn each highlighted different aspects of the study (from an improved economy to better pedestrian and bicycle access) that will benefit island residents, commuters and tourists."
