Dear Friend,
Here's what's in this week's edition of CoolCATs Weekly:
1) Back to the Future?
2) Public Workshop on Aquidneck Island
| 1) Back to the Future? |
|
Many of you have come out to the Sierra Club's public screenings of Taken for a Ride, the documentary that exposed the auto and oil industry's destruction of America's public transit system. If you have seen it, then you are as bewildered as I am about the extent of what we had and lost. The historic streetcar systems were as extensive as our modern highway system.
But the future of America's transportation system is potentially in our control for the first time in several decades. And the vision for safer, healthier, livable communities has been articulated, especially by the Congress for the New Urbanism and Reconnectig America. If we take control of our transportation system, we could see a modern streetcar return to America's communities.
This Tuesday evening is just the beginning! The U.S. Congress and the Obama administration are already gearing up to transform our federal transportation policy. What an opportunity to rebuild and reshape healthier communities with clean, affordable transportation choices. |
| 2) This Tuesday: Make your voice heard for Cool Communities at the Aquidneck Island Transportation Study Public Workshop |
|
This Tuesday, the Aquidneck Island Transportation Study will hold its first official public workshop to help shape Aquidneck Island's transportation system of tomorrow.
A transportation system of tomorrow must address global warming emissions and energy independence with rapid transit, safe and convenient bicycle routes, and walkable communities. You can be a part of helping to rebuild 21st Century transportation for the New Energy Economy.
Aquidneck Island Transportation Workshop Tuesday, September 29, 2009, 6-9PM Middletown Town Hall Council Chamber 350 East Main Road, Middletown, RI

| 3) What are CoolCATs? |
Cool CATs are the Sierra Club's Cool Cities Community Action Teams. Cool Cities or Cool Communities are those local governments that sign on to the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. Sierra Club Community Action Teams are teams of volunteer activists who work together to build environmental communities by hosting house parties, going door to door with our message, or participating in phone banks. |
Thank you for signing up for Cool CATs Weekly. You can make your community "Cool" by advocating for renewable power, green buildings and transportation choices. Visit the Cool Cities website for resources and toolkits. Sincerely, Chris Wilhite Sierra Club Rhode Island Chapter |
