Dear Sierra Club Supporter,
Mattawoman Creek, located only 20 miles south of Washington DC, is the last, best remnant of what the Chesapeake Bay rivers were like when the Bay teemed with life. Come see it, enjoy its tranquil beauty, and help us save this last refuge.
The Mattawoman is home to eagles, herons, beaver, otters, bass and other migratory fish, American lotus and a diversity of wonderful plants and animals. It is the "best of the best" rivers and creeks in the State, according to the Department of Natural Resources. It's a treasure you'll want to see.
Yet, it is at risk. It is the fourth most endangered river on American River's list for 2009. A new highway would pave directly across the creek and the lands that feed it. Sprawling suburban housing developments threaten to replace its forests with cement, degrading the quality of its water and the wildlife it supports. The Maryland Department of Environment is due to decide on its fate by December 1st.
Please join us to the see Mattawoman Creek for yourself. On Sunday November 8th we will hold a Fall Colors Paddle on the Mattawoman. At 11am, we will begin our paddle followed by a potluck lunch at 1pm. Canoes, kayaks and bikes are available for rent from a local outfitter.
