Take Action to protect mercury-impaired
The North Carolina Division of Air Quality is still accepting public comment on Titan Cement's draft air permit for a proposed coal-fired cement plant. If built the plant will be a major source of air toxics - and greenhouse gases - in an area already heavily polluted with mercury.
Of particular concern to citizens are impacts of atmospheric sediment on the Northeast Cape Fear River, which is classified as an aquatic resource of national importance by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, as well as the plant's proximity to nearly 8,000 K-12 students. The river is already on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s list of impaired waters.
Make sure to tell DAQ they need a stronger air permit.
Outings

Our hike will be short (about 2 miles roundtrip) and relatively easy, but there are some steep sections and rough areas with loose, rocky footing. Participation is limited to 12 people; a deposit is required, but will be returned to participants the day of the hike. Click here for information about
The falls are over 200 ft high and the six miles easy. Join us! Bring water, lunch and rain gear. We'll meet at 8:00 and be back in town by 6. For more information call Joel Wooten before 9:00 p.m. at (336) 679-8672 or email at Joelhike@yahoo.com.
