Background on the Big Polluters Rule
Right now more than half of all the global warming pollution in the U.S. is produced by only a handful of large sources, including coal power plants. The EPA is proposing a rule to clean up these large sources of global warming emissions under the Clean Air Act. By targeting the largest sources, the regulation will quickly cut global warming pollution while still helping our economy grow through the development of clean energy technologies. The rule will initially only apply to offenders emitting at least 25,000 tons of greenhouse gases each year, exempting small businesses, churches and apartment buildings, while addressing the bulk of the nation’s global warming pollution.
