Sierra Club Applauds Bipartisan Work on Clean Energy Jobs Legislation
Statement of Sierra Club Executive Director Carl Pope
Today’s press conference from Senators John Kerry, Lindsey Graham, and Joe Lieberman revealing new clean energy legislation framework shows that excellent bipartisan work continues. Through these senators’ bold action, our country is moving closer to a clean energy economy.
As the international climate talks continue in Copenhagen, Denmark, the movement here at home on creating a clean energy economy is a sign that the U.S. is serious about taking action on global warming. However, there are some provisions in the plan, such as investments in coal, nuclear and off-shore drilling that we think would be better spent on cleaner, safer alternatives.
The U.S. can and should be a leader in clean energy and energy efficiency, a move that will boost the economy, enhance our national security and lower global warming pollution.
The cooperation of Senators Kerry, Graham and Lieberman is to be commended, as we must all work together to create more jobs, less pollution and greater security.
