Activist Network

In fall 2009, the Sierra Club debuted its fourth online community after Climate Crossroads, Sierra Club Trails and the Sierra Student Coalition. The Activist Network, which is built around Sierra Club teams such as national issue teams, chapters, and groups is an online community, or social network. It is a place where visitors can create profiles for themselves and interact with other users and groups without knowing any programming language like html. It is a place that Georgia is starting to make a presence.
Georgia Chapter Volunteers
The Activist Network is a place to meet like-minded people and take action with the main purpose to help activists get things done. The most important thing about the Activist Network online community is that it was built for and will continue to be customized for activists. Once activists take the opportunity to build their pages, the potential for sharing information and engaging individuals will be expanded.

As an online community, the Activist Network creates a more specific social network for activists than Facebook and other social networks. When you meet in person or trade emails with Sierra Club activists, some of what you do is social, but you are focused on accomplishing work. Teams are forming in the Activist Network from all over the country, including Georgia. They are working at all levels on a wide range of topics: energy policy, water monitoring, coal, zero waste, toxics, leadership development in the club, newsletters, hydrofracking, and more.

Some examples of what is being done:

  • Planning
  • Finalizing agendas, minutes, fact sheets, op eds and other materials
  • Sharing reports and resources quickly and easily
  • Discussing the latest news
  • Collecting photos and data
  • Recruiting activists in their region or area of interest
  • Networking with activists across the country who face similar challenges and want to share ideas and resources

All of this online work is being done by the activists without having to consult with a webmaster.

On Tuesday, June 15th, an open house for the Activist Network Online Community will be coming to Georgia. Sierra Club trainer Jennifer Waggoner will be coming to the Georgia Chapter at noon for a presentation of the Activist Network and a question and answer session. To RSVP please email Jennifer at In the meantime, check out the Activist Network Georgia Pages for smart energy or the Georgia Chapter.  For more information on the Activist Network, please click here.

Currently Georgia's 2010 election cycle is upon us and for the first time, Georgia's environmental community has come together to speak with one voice on environmental issues that are of importance to Georgia's citizens. We have unified a coalition of over 30 groups and drafted a 10 point pledge to present to the candidates for Georgia's highest office and seek their commitment to a greener and more sustainable Georgia. To meet this challenge, we need to engage and educate the public and to seek their assistance to support this effort to "Green the Governor" on key issues such as water, energy and transportation and your help is vital to meeting our goal.
