Fiorina Ignores CIA, Self in Criticism of Boxer on Global Warming

San Francisco, CA: A new ad from Senate Candidate Carly Fiorina criticizes Senator Boxer for her work to address Climate Change and National Security.  The following is a statement in response from Carl Pope, Chairman of Sierra Club

"Senator Boxer's work to solve climate change is all about improving the ways we make and use energy.  We need to move away from polluting sources of energy like oil which entangle us in war and led to the BP disaster in the Gulf.   It's shocking that Carly Fiorina thinks that tackling climate change by reducing our oil dependence wouldn't affect our national security."

Fiorina presents some contradictions on her position:

  • In the new ad Carly Fiorina mentions her history with the C.I.A. as her credential for dismissing Senator Boxer's work to address National Security and Climate Change yet the C.I.A. has a Center on Climate Change and National Security  that addresses "the national security impact of phenomena such as desertification, rising sea levels, population shifts, and heightened competition for natural resources."
  • As recently as 2008 she praised John McCain's cap and trade bill at the Republican National Convention.
  • On her own webpage Carly Fiorina says "We must stop shipping billions of American dollars across the ocean to buy oil from countries hostile to our interests."

"Senator Boxer understands that meeting the challenge of global warming means addressing many issues at once--and it doesn't mean worrying about the weather.  Senator Boxer has led the way on the links between our changing climate, clean energy, jobs and security for years."
