ANOTHER DECADE IS TOO LONG TO BURN DIRTY COAL!
Oregon's clean energy future can only happen if we take action to kick Oregon's addiction to coal. On June 23, the Oregon Public Utility Commission will hold an important hearing on the fate of the Boardman coal plant and whether Portland General Electric should close it in the next five years, in another decade, or spend $500 million and burn coal through 2040.

We need you to attend and tell the PUC that further investment to keep this aging coal plant running is bad for Oregon. You can help ensure Oregon goes coal-free and invests in a clean energy future!

EASTSIDE FOREST BILL NEEDS YOUR INPUT!
The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee is taking testimony on S. 2895, Senator Wyden's eastside forest bill, until June 18. While supportive of some of the provisions of the bill, including protection for large diameter trees, the Sierra Club has raised concerns over the how the bill would do away with administrative appeals that help prevent damaging logging projects, and arbitrary acreage targets that could push logging into sensitive old growth forest stands. You can learn more about the Sierra Club's concerns on our blog.
Please click here to send a note to Senator Wyden and the Senate Energy Committee urging them to improve on S. 2895.

TIME IS RUNNING OUT FOR NEW OREGON WILDERNESS!
While eastside forests are getting a lot of attention, important proposals to protect new Wilderness and wild rivers in Oregon appear to be stalled. Please contact Senator Wyden and urge him to move forward with legislation to protect nearly 60,000 acres along the Rogue River in southwest Oregon, and move forward swiftly with other stalled legislation to protect important wild forests in Oregon. PALOMAR PIPELINE THREAT STILL ALIVE!
On May 27th over 250 concerned citizens rallied outside the NW Natural Gas shareholders meeting in Portland to call for an end to their Palomar Gas Pipeline. Despite the huge victory over Bradwood Landing LNG on the Columbia River, NW Natural is still planning to build the Palomar pipeline across the Mt. Hood National Forest, and Bradwood Landing’s federal permit to develop an LNG terminal and associated pipelines is still active. We need to be sure that the bankruptcy of Bradwood translates to real action from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) on the Bradwood LNG terminal and the associated Palomar Pipeline. Click here and help us to make that happen by contacting our US Senators and asking them to urge FERC to pull the plug on the Bradwood and Palomar applications.

CELEBRATING OUR RECENT VICTORIES!
Sierra Club Home Weatherization efforts pay off! On the heels of the late April announcement that Oregon is receiving $20 million in federal money to create green jobs in home weatherization, the City of Portland announced approval of a Sierra Club supported proposal to weatherize 100 homes in a NE Portland neighborhood this summer. As part of Portland's Clean Energy Works program, the Sierra Club will be partnering with a diverse group of labor, community organizations and weatherization contractors to save energy, cut energy bills and create jobs. Our Chapter Chair, Wes Kempfer, has already been spotlighted by the US Department of Energy for his efforts. Will you be next? Stay tuned for details! |
