After more than two months, the BP oil disaster is still devastating the Gulf, its wildlife, and its communities. Everyone's mad -- at BP, at the government, or at the sheer senselessness of the worst environmental disaster in our history.
By itself, though, getting mad only raises your blood pressure. Channeling your anger into action? That can drive real change. Yesterday, President Obama challenged Americans to "organize from the bottom up" to demand a clean-energy future in response to this disaster.
Mr. President: Sierra Club volunteers have been organizing and responding for two months now and aren't about to stop. Read on for ways to send a clean-energy message that we're ready to move Beyond Oil.
Our message to President Obama and Congress is that we want our country to be free from oil in twenty years. And we can do it! But only with a bold national commitment right now. You can show your support for this goal by planting a virtual flag on the National Mall.
Next week, we'll use thousands of real flags to spell out the words "Freedom from oil" in giant letters in front of the Washington Monument in D.C. Each virtual flag planted online will be represented by a real flag in D.C, right before the 4th of July, where our leaders can't fail to see the message.
Neil Armstrong had to go all the way to the moon -- you can plant your flag with just a mouse click.
This Saturday, June 26, you can hit the beach to oppose offshore oil drilling and champion clean energy as part of Hands Across the Sand, a nationwide demonstration against offshore drilling and for clean, renewable energy. All you need to do is go the beach (or your local beach stand-in) at 11 AM, line up, and join hands.
More than 500 communities have Hands Across the Sand events planned -- find the event nearest you and sign up now.
The Sierra Club is partnering with Brave New Foundation and award-winning filmmaker Robert Greenwald to produce a short documentary about the true effect of the BP oil disaster on the Gulf Coast and why we need to end our addiction to oil. Watch the trailer.
Sierra Club volunteers are organizing hundreds of house parties next week where friends can gather to watch the film online and take action to help the Gulf Coast and move our nation beyond oil.
Sign up to host, invite your friends, and we'll send you a free DVD of the 15-minute film, along with discussion questions and materials.
You don't have to wait 20 years to start using less gas. Send Big Oil a message today by cutting back at the pump. We've put together a bunch of our favorite ways to move Beyond Oil right now in a special series of blog posts at Climate Crossroads.
Got an iPhone or iPad? The new update to our free Sierra Club Eco Hero app lets you make a Beyond Oil pledge (such as taking public transit) and add it to a map showing who's doing what all over the U.S.
Last week, eleven citizen lobbyists from eight states descended on Washington, D.C., for a Sierra Club Resilient Habitats Lobby Week. These aren't the kind of lobbyists who pass out cigars and golfing trips -- they're dedicated volunteers who care about protecting the kinds of wild places that BP has desecrated. They've posted reports on the Activist Network about what it was like -- the marble halls, the photo ops, the subways under the Capitol, and, yes, the best joke of the week. You can show your support for these dedicated volunteers by commenting on and sharing their blog posts at the Activist Network.
