When the flow of oil from BP's Deepwater Horizon disaster has stopped once and for all, Americans will give thanks. What we cannot do, however, is assume that the crisis in the Gulf of Mexico is over just because the oil is no longer gushing.
That's why the Sierra Club is working closely with our local allies and volunteers in the Gulf region as well as with our partners in the faith community, the military veteran community, and others to maintain awareness of the long-term effects on both the wildlife and the communities of the Gulf Coast.
Recently touring the area were world-class athletes ranging from Olympic medalists to NFL and NHL stars. Deeply moved, they voiced their support for Gulf Coast communities and vowed to share with their fans what they had seen.
Evan Geary had never been out west before being selected this summer from hundreds of applicants for what is universally known as "The Best Internship on Earth." (Well, if you love being outdoors and saving the planet, it's easily the best.) So we couldn't wait to see what would happen when this city slicker finally got his feet wet west of the Mississippi. Turns out more than his feet got wet!
See for yourself in his newest video report.

Last week, President Obama signed a bill that will enact national standards for formaldehyde in composite wood products. Now all Americans will be safer from harmful levels of the carcinogen, which can also cause watery eyes, burning sensations in the eyes and throat, nausea, and difficulty in breathing.
National attention was first focused on the dangers of formaldehyde when a Sierra Club investigation revealed that tens of thousands of families were sickened after being housed in FEMA-supplied Katrina trailers.
It's National Parks and Recreation Month, so don't miss the chance to spend some quality time outdoors. If you haven't checked out the hikes at Sierra Club Trails lately, now's the time! Is there a hike listed for your favorite park? If not, why not add one yourself?
And while you're visiting Trails, be sure to check out and vote for your favorite image in our monthly photo contest. July's theme was "Freedom," and this month's winner will score a free pair each of Garmont hiking boots, Lifelink trekking poles, and Bridgedale socks! Be sure to enter your own photo next month.
The Sierra Club Foundation is one of ten environmental nonprofits entered in the American Express Members Project. The voting period ends August 22, but we need you to vote today and mark your calendar now to vote each week through August 22. The organization with the most votes in each of five categories will win $200,000, donated by American Express.
Visit the website each week where you can vote for just 1 of the 50 nonprofits and help The Sierra Club Foundation win!
Ever fantasize about having your own hideaway deep in the woods? A place you could go to get away from it all and reconnect with nature? Well, thanks to the Sierra Club, you already do have a place like that.
In fact, we have a whole network of lodges and huts, but the crown jewel is Clair Tappaan Lodge, nestled in the Sierra Nevada near the top of Donner Pass. It was built by Sierra Club volunteers in the 1930s who never dreamed that one day you would be able to find it on Facebook. Stop on by!
