Sierra Club activist Ana Elisa Peréz Quintero is one of only six young people to receive this year's distinguished Brower Youth Award. As a member of the Sierra Club's Puerto Rico Chapter, 20-year-old Ana Elisa has been a community leader in the fight to preserve the island's beautiful Northeast Ecological Corridor, a 3,000-acre stretch that is home to 40 endemic and threatened species, including the leatherback sea turtle.
You can read more about Ana Elisa's remarkable accomplishments and the current status of the Northeast Ecological Corridor in our Scrapbook blog -- a great place to find stories about the work of Sierra Club volunteers and activists around the country.
If you'd prefer to buy toothpaste that's tough on plaque but easy on the planet, we've got solid recommendations from four out of five dentists.
That fifth dentist? He's got a minty-fresh recipe for making your own toothpaste: a concoction that will "reverse the damaging effects of acids, eliminate bad breath, and strengthen teeth -- all while reducing your carbon footprint."
(That's one less reason to dread those piles of leftover Halloween candy next week.) |
Volunteers from the New Jersey Sierra Club teamed up with Princeton University undergrads last month to clean up two stretches of the D&R Canal near Princeton.
Most of the canal system, built in the 1830s, was designated a New Jersey State Park in 1974. The Club's Water Sentinels program donated T-shirts, mesh bags, and vulcanized gloves and liners, as volunteers used canoes to haul an estimated 820 pounds of trash and more than 1,200 pounds of recyclables out of the canal.
Ready to get your boots wet and protect local waterways? Water Sentinels is a fantastic way to meet people and make a difference.

Big thanks to the hundreds of Insider readers who submitted T-shirt slogans for the rally and march that have now been combined into the "Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear." We've decided to follow Stewart and Colbert's example and do a combined T-shirt, too.
Here are the winning words: Front (Sanity): FRACKING: It even sounds dirty. Back (Fear): Mountaintop Removal Mining: Keep the Earth Flat!
P.S. If you missed Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune's blog post about the rally last week, then you also missed his link to a Sierra Club/Stephen Colbert moment that reportedly forced thousand of black bears into early hibernation. |
