No More Coal!

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has re-opened the public comment period on PGE’s Boardman coal fired power plant until November 15th. PGE has submitted yet another plan to keep the state’s largest individual source of air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions open for another ten years, rather than addressing its decade long history of Clean Air Act violations in the near term.

Please submit comments to DEQ urging them to push PGE to close this dirty coal plant as soon as 2015 and keep other earlier closure options on the table. Let's not let PGE skirt the law one more time. Click here to submit a comment to DEQ!

If you live within driving distance of Portland, please attend a public hearing on PGE’s latest plan on Monday, November 8th at 6 pm at the Metro office at 600 NE Grand Ave. (map)

Sage Grouse

The Sage Grouse is currently considered to be warranted for listing as an endangered species due to the destruction of native sagebrush habitat across the West. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) is developing a plan to help ensure the species does not continue to decline. The plan could affect the siting of energy projects and transmission lines, cattle grazing, and development across eastern Oregon's high deserts.
Click here to read more about the plan and offer your commentsODFW is accepting public comment on the plan through Nov. 15.

Despite overwhelmingly popular support, Congress still has yet to take up the issue of protecting up to 60,000 acres around Oregon’s Rogue River as Wilderness. Please send an email today to Oregon Senators Wyden and Merkley, and your member of Congress and urge them to introduce this legislation and work to pass it before the end of 2010.

Wolf Pup Howling

We are happy to announce that John Kitzhaber has been elected Governor of Oregon! This was the closest Governor's race in the country, with Kitzhaber appearing to win by a margin roughly equivalent to Sierra Club membership in Oregon. Thanks to all who cast their ballots, donated or volunteered in this critical election!

In early November, the Oregon Court of Appeals issued a final and crushing blow to the Bradwood Landing LNG terminal on the Columbia River. The Court ruled that Clatsop County should have never approved construction of the Bradwood Landing facility due to its harmful impact on traditional fishing grounds and salmon habitat. The ruling could have implications for two other proposed LNG terminals in Oregon -- Jordan Cove in Coos Bay and Oregon LNG near Astoria. Click here to read more!
