First Public Hearing on Truck Pollution a Success! Monday's public hearing in Chicago on the Environmental Protection Agency's proposed fuel economy and emissions standards for trucks went very well, according to local organizers. Our members did a fantastic job with their testimony, covering a variety of backgrounds and stories. Sierra Club supporters concerned about gas guzzling/global warming pollution spewing trucks accounted for a good portion of all the citizen testimony given. Check out the Sierra Club Illinois' twitter feed for some great play-by-play of the hearing. The next hearing is Thursday (Nov. 18) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Here's some more background on these proposed rules from EPA. |
EPA's Latest Guidance on Global Warming Pollution Last week the Environmental Protection Agency issued the latest in several steps to reduce harmful global warming pollution. Since a 2007 Supreme Court ruling required the EPA to regulate harmful greenhouse gases, the agency has been working to craft rules and guidelines to help states and businesses clean up pollution. This latest guidance will help large pollution sources determine the best existing technologies to reduce emissions (Best Available Control Technology, or BACT). "(This) guidance encourages a consistent process that will help minimize pollution in cost-effective ways," said Sierra Club Deputy Conservation Director Bruce Nilles. "It is not a one-size-fits-all standard, but rather, calls for pollution-reducing controls for each facility, taking into account what is achievable, as well as economically feasible." |
Celebs Go Car-Free in LA Two stars from the ABC TV show "Castle" - Stana Katic and Seamus Dever - are going car-free in Los Angeles for a week and documenting the experiment. They even brought along Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune for part of it. Each day this week they’re posting a video of their Alternative Travel Project, so check it out! |
