Creatures of the Borderlands
Members of the International League of Conservation Photographers recently ventured to the US-Mexico borderlands to photograph the region's wildlife, ecology, and people. The result was Continental Divide, a traveling photo exhibit which earlier this month made its way to Jackson, Mississippi. Final Push to Save Our Mountains
The EPA is finalizing a policy right now that could virtually end mountaintop-removal coal mining, but coal companies and coal-state politicians are doing all they can to stop it.
We have until December 1 to let the EPA know that we support its efforts to protect Appalachia. Send your message today!

Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune recently visited Pennsylvania to meet with people who've been affected by reckless natural gas drilling. He was also interviewed for an episode of 60 Minutes about drilling for shale gas using hydraulic fracturing ("fracking").
Fracking, as Brune wrote in his blog post The Word Obama Forgot to Say, is "exempt from the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Clean Air Act, parts of the Clean Water Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, as well as our country's hazardous waste and cleanup laws."
How can we change that? The Sierra Club's Activist Network has a team working on the issue, and they're looking for volunteers to help them stop unregulated drilling.
Do you like cross-country skiing? Or snowshoeing? How about just sitting by a roaring fire, toasting your tootsies and sipping cocoa? You could be doing all of those this winter if you win the Grand Prize in Sierra magazine's Winter Sports Travel Contest -- a five-night trip including airfare to the Hotel Park City in Utah. Along with the winter sports, you'll enjoy deluxe all-suite accommodations, a full-service Alpine spa, and fine dining.
There are plenty of other only-slightly-less-grand prizes, too. All you have to do is fill out one little form (and get a little lucky).

As part of "The Alternative Travel Project," TV actors Stana Katic and Seamus Dever from the ABC show "Castle" vowed to give up their cars for seven days in Los Angeles. No, they didn't spend the whole week at the beach -- their plan was to show how easy it is to get around town using alternatives like bicycles and public transit.
You can see the result in four video episodes (watch for Michael Brune's cameo as "guy who knows exactly how many supertankers of oil Americans save each year by taking public transit").

Over the past 50 years, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge has narrowly escaped numerous efforts by Big Oil to turn it into an industrial drilling wasteland. Today, Big Oil is fighting harder than ever to get its hands on this special place. By designating the Arctic Refuge as a National Monument, President Obama can protect this national treasure and leave a wild legacy for all of our children and grandchildren.
Sign the Sierra Club's 50th-anniversary card to President Obama, and send a clear message that it's time to make a commitment to protect the Arctic Refuge forever.

What if you could "fill 'er up" straight from the sun? Envision Solar has designed electric-vehicle charging stations fueled by "solar trees" that sit in parking lots. The company's president, Desmond Wheatley, tells our Compass blog how his company is partnering with GM as part of the rollout of the Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid.
