Environmental Hero Richard Goldman
Dies at Age 90
SAN FRANCISCO – Today, renowned philanthropist Richard Goldman,
creator of the Goldman Environmental Prize for grassroots activism, died in his
home of natural causes.
Statement of Sierra Club Chairman
Carl Pope
Today, the environmental movement has lost a dear friend and
champion.
For decades my favorite day of the year was the Goldman
Environmental Prize ceremony. The prize
was a high-bar, high wire challenge that recognized citizens around the world
who took great personal risks to protect their neighbors and the natural world.
Goldman Prize winners were, quite simply, the bravest of the brave.
No part of the globe is untouched by Richard's work, and all are
better for it.
His departure reminds us
that there is a better angel of our natures, just waiting to be inspired.
