1) Sierra Club RI Needs You!

The Rhode Island Chapter is looking for some new blood (or old) to step into its volunteer leadership positions as we move into the new year. Most importantly, we need someone to come forward and volunteer for our treasurer duties. Training for the position is available, but basically we need someone who can balance the books on a monthly basis. Additionally, we will be holding executive committee elections in the coming month, and we have three spaces to be filled on our seven person board. As an executive committee member, you will have a lot of fun helping to guide the direction of the Chapter's work. If you are interested in one or both of these positions or know someone else who would be, please get in touch with me, abel.collins@sierraclub.org, or pass the message along. Thanks!

2) Is the Future of Transportation on Two Wheels?

There is a lot of talk in the air about how electric cars are going to be our saving grace. Maybe. On the other hand, maybe it's the tried and true technology of the bicycle which is going to answer our transportation needs as we deal with the problems of diminishing oil supplies and mitigating climate change. Read this excellent article on the potential of the bike.

3) Back from Santa Fe

I'm back, having enjoyed an informative and inspiring colloquium for the state lobby corps. With prospects dim on the federal front, I'm happy (in a bittersweet way) to report that Sierra Club is going to move the focus of its lobbying efforts to the state level. Rhode Island promises to be at the forefront of many of the pressing issues that the Club is tackling, including renewable energy, moving toward an electrified car fleet, and transportation reform. Success at the state level will be critical in providing a model for legislation at the federal level in the future, and I'm eager to see what we can do.
