Take Action to Keep Our Voice in Line Siting Decisions The Arizona Legislature has proposed a strike everything amendment on SB1517 (Melvin, Aboud: Antenori, et al.) that limits public involvement in transmission line siting in Arizona. Currently, all proposed transmission lines that are greater than 115 kilovolts must get a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and go through the line siting process. This bill would change that. This bill is being pushed by proponents of the SunZia Southwest Transmission Project, which consists of two 500-kV transmission lines that, if built, will stretch across about 460 miles of Arizona and New Mexico. Several of the proposed locations in Arizona would affect important public lands and wildlife habitat, including the San Pedro River and the Aravaipa watershed. The proponents are hoping to jam this bill through so that the project is not subject to review and approval, denial, or approval with conditions by the Arizona Power Plant and Transmission Line Siting Committee. Allowing companies to bypass this process limits public input and access to information and gives Arizona less of a voice on these multi-state projects. Please contact your representatives today and ask them to oppose this strike everything amendment. For more information, contact Sandy Bahr at (602) 253-8633 or sandy.bahr@sierraclub.org. |

There's Still Time to Stop New Uranium Mines Near Grand Canyon The Bureau of Land Management is accepting comments through May 4 on a proposal to protect just over one million acres of public lands around Grand Canyon from uranium mines. If you have not done so already, please take time to comment. Our comments can make a huge difference in moving this forward! The proposed mineral withdrawal would place a 20-year ban on new uranium mine claims and mining in this area -- this is the longest that the area can be protected without an act of Congress. If you haven't already submitted a comment, please do so today! Help us protect over one million acres of public land around Grand Canyon. Please also consider writing a letter to the Arizona Republic or the Arizona Daily Sun thanking Rep. Raúl Grijalva for reintroducing the Grand Canyon Watersheds Protection Act of 2011 (H.R. 855), which would permanently protect the entire Grand Canyon watershed from new mines -- forever! |

Public Comment Sought on Proposed Transmission Line (NOTE: This will take the place of our regularly scheduled Energy Committee meeting.) The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) would like your input on a proposed electric transmission project northwest of Phoenix. Please join us at the public meeting to learn more about the project and voice your thoughts.
Arizona Public Service (APS) has filed for a right-of-way grant on public lands to construct an above-ground transmission system spanning 38 miles. It would cross approximately 10.5 miles of federal public lands in two separate locations. |
