1) Surprise, surprise. Building Roads Doesn't Decrease Traffic

The Wall Street Journal (of all places?!) highlighted a thorough study of traffic patterns which goes a long way toward justifying Rhode Island's general transportation policy of not increasing road capacity. It's nice to see some mainstream recognition that building more lanes solves nothing. Check the article out, it's worth the quick read.

2) Speaking of Decreasing Traffic

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority is getting a major makeover with the help of the Chafee Administration. Last week, the Governor nominated four new faces to the RIPTA board as well as the return of Steve Durkee, as detailed in this projo post. Along with new CEO Charles Odimgbe and the recently released strategic plan, we can realistically hope for a reinvigorated transit system. Cheers!

3) AND, We Could Complete Streets

In case you missed it, take a moment to read the op-ed I penned in support of the creation of a complete streets council. It was run in Sunday's Providence Journal, and I hope that it will give the legislation the push it needs to make it over the finish line. You can increase its effect by sharing it with friends (think facebook), or by taking the op-ed's advice and talking to your local officials about getting it passed.
Conveniently, there's a simple way to do just that. Here are the Complete Streets Council Act action alerts for the Senate and House. Thanks for your support.
