Take Action: Protect Communities from Toxic Mercury
Big polluters and their friends in Congress have repeatedly attacked the Environmental Protection Agency for its efforts to keep communities safe from mercury and other toxic pollutants emitted into the air by dirty coal plants. Just last week, Rep. John Dingell (D-MI) and 26 House Democrats sent a letter to Administrator Lisa Jackson urging the EPA to delay the safeguard. Ask your Congressional representative to sign the Capps-Schakowsky letter in support of strong mercury safeguards! |

Study: Hispanics at Higher Risk for Mercury Pollution
An analysis of several studies conducted among Latinos reveals that this community faces a disproportionate risk from toxic mercury pollution because of a combination of cultural, economic, and linguistic factors. Some 31 percent of Latinos fish regularly, and 76 percent of those eat and share what they catch with their families. These families include young children and women of childbearing age, the two most vulnerable population sectors to mercury poisoning. Learn more about the study and the mercury risks from coal-fired power plants. |

Youth: New Facebook App for Kids Supports "Let's Move Outside"
To commemorate its one-year anniversary and celebrate National Get Outdoors Month, the Outdoors Alliance for Kids (OAK), of which the Sierra Club is a founding member, is launching a new Facebook application to inspire and encourage young people to get outside and be active. In support of the President's America's Great Outdoors Initiative and the First Lady's Let's Move Outside! program, the new Get Your Nature On Facebook application will provide inspiration, encouragement, and resources to young people who commit to getting active in the outdoors this year. In addition, members of OAK participated in a Let's Move Outside! event at the White House yesterday, where students from D.C.'s Thurgood Marshall High School experienced the joys of outdoor recreation on the South Lawn. |
