1) CTC's "Consequences of Inaction"
|
After two years of advocating for a sustainable way to fund transportation in Rhode Island, the general assembly finally took some action to address the problem in the House budget proposal released on Friday. Unfortunately, the House has given us only half the increase in registration fees that we have been seeking. Moreover, all the revenues are funneled to RIDOT without dedicating any specifically to RIPTA or municipalities, and they won't be collected until 2014.
Lest we forget the scope of the problem and the inadequacy of the proposed solution, the Coalition for Transportation Choices put together a fantastic four part series on the consequences of failing to address our transportation funding crisis. You can read them in order by following the links here: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4.

2) The True Price of Gas: a video short
|
Speaking of costs, check out this great video about the real price of gasoline put together by the center for investigative reporting.

3) Dump the Pump
|
The inevitable conclusion that we reach in the face of such high costs is that we have to move away from a transportation system completely dominated by the personal automobile. That's why Sierra Club RI did its part to promote Dump the Pump Day last week. We got good publicity from Newport Daily News, the projo, and WRNI, but the awareness has to last for more than a day. Can we do it?
I think we can. I'd like to collect some short video testimonials from RI Sierra Club members that we can post on the Chapter's new Youtube channel (the link is below) detailing what we have done to dump the pump. Break a leg! I invite you to get the film rolling yourselves, but if you need help, don't hesitate to contact me, abel.collins@sierraclub.org.
