Y'all Won't Want to Miss the Georgia Chapter Retreat

Deadline to Register is Wednesday, September 21st at 5pm!

Jekyll Island is truly one of Georgia's special places. Initially a State Park, in 1950 the Jekyll Island Authority (JIA) was created to allow private development that would support the functioning of the services needed, the idea being that it would make the island self-sustaining.  Because of the governance, the development of the island has struck a balance between affordable vacation amenities and wild coast treasures. In recent years, private developers have sought to make Jekyll more high-end and develop some of the special wild areas. The Georgia Chapter has been working with the Initiative to Protect Jekyll to preserve the character of Jekyll for all. We will take a moment to celebrate our success in preservation of this special place for regular Georgians!

Friday night will feature an environmental film festival. On Saturday, outings include kayaking, a dolphin tour, a Jekyll bike tour, a naturalist beach tour, kite flying on the beach, birding, and a trip to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center.  Workshops include Saving Jekyll, Activist Tools, Coastal Issues, Renewable Energy, New Legislative Districts, Nuclear Issues, and a program on the Sierra Club's Take Me Fishing program.

At our Saturday night Banquet we will hear from our fearless leader, Michael Brune, who has been the Sierra Club's national Executive Director for about a year and a half. We have an awesome Silent Auction lined up, followed by our volunteer awards ceremony and then will let loose with Jekyll Islands favorite DJ.

Good news from Cartersville today about the US 411 Connector, which was proposed to blast through Dobbins Mountain. It looks like the efforts to choose a different route may be successful as the Atlanta Business Chronicle reports that GDOT has agreed to look at other routes. Congrats to the Coalition for the Right Road!
