For years, the Sierra Club and our partners have believed that the efforts of energy speculators to develop liquefied natural gas (LNG) import facilities along Oregon's coast were financial boondoggles with huge environmental costs. And more recently, we realized the real goal was to export American natural gas overseas.

Today, we're no longer guessing. The industry has admitted that LNG export is their goal. What would LNG export mean to Oregon? The answer: hundreds of miles of gas pipelines posing risks to fish, farms, forests and rivers across Oregon; damage to sensitive estuaries and fisheries; and increased natural gas prices for Oregon families and businesses.

It's  time for our leaders to say no to LNG in Oregon. Click here to learn more about the Sierra Club's efforts to stop LNG exports. E-mail Anti-LNG Comittee chair Ted Gleichman to learn more about how you can get involved!

As part of our campaign to protect Oregon's Tillamook State Forest, we are updating our 10 year old '50 Hikes in the Tillamook State Forest' hike book to highlight the special places these public lands hold. Click here to read about some great hikes in the Tillamook and e-mail Ivan Maluski to help us with our efforts to update the hike book this fall.

Also, with the Board of Forestry meeting in early November to set their agenda for next year, please also be sure to sign our online petition calling on Governor Kitzhaber and the Board of Forestry to create protected areas on state lands that would be safe from logging and roadbuilding for future generations.

Bye Bye Boardman
Last week a federal judge approved a settlement agreement between the Sierra Club and Portland General Electric addressing the company's violations of the Clean Air Act at the Boardman coal plant. The agreement secures a court enforceable shutdown date of 2020 for Oregon's only coal fired power plant, significant reductions in haze causing pollution in the near term, and the creation of a $2.5 million fund for restoration in the Columbia River Gorge and Hells Canyon, air pollution reduction, and the deployment of distributed renewable energy such as rooftop solar panels.

What's next?
With a date-certain phaseout plan for Oregon's only coal plant, the Sierra Club is now focusing on helping people across Oregon be part of shaping Oregon's renewable energy future. Over the summer, our members have installed nearly 40,000 watts of solar on their roofs through our Go Solar with the Sierra Club Program! We have also reached out to thousands of homeowners to sign them up for Clean Energy Works, a program to weatherize homes across Oregon. We're also working with our partners throughout the region to fight proposals to export coal from Oregon ports to Asia. Want to get more involved?  Click here to fill out our volunteer form!
