Grassroots Activism: Rallying for Clean Air and Good Jobs
Last week the Sierra Club joined the Teamsters, SEIU, Puget Sound Sage, Change to Win, and the Church Council of Greater Seattle to rally outside the American Port Authority Conference in Seattle in support of clean air and good jobs. Neighborhoods surrounding the Seattle Port have some of the highest asthma rates in the region, and the Puget Sound region ranks in the top 5 percent for air toxics. This is a key environmental justice issue in Seattle, and the Washington State Chapter of the Sierra Club has been working with allies in the labor and the environmental justice community on port reform for the past couple of years. "Sustainable communities need clean air and good jobs -- instead we're stuck with dirty air and dead-end jobs"," said Benjamin Courteau of the Washington State Chapter. |
