Oregon Chapter - Sierra Club

Welcome to the monthly email newsletter of the Sierra Club's Oregon Chapter!
October 2011 - Issue 31

In late September, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) issued a kill order for two wolves in Oregon's Imnaha pack. If carried out, this kill order will functionally eliminate Oregon's first breeding pair of wolves since they were eradicated from the state 60 years ago. On October 5, the Oregon Court of Appeals issued a temporary injunction blocking the kill order, but it could be lifted any day. Please send an email to Governor Kitzhaber today and urge him to rescind ODFW's Imnaha pack kill order!

Over the past year, Oregon's wolf numbers have plummeted under ODFW management from 21 to 14 animals. ODFW is bowing to political pressure from anti-wolf activists and undermining Oregon's wolf management plan which calls for the reestablishment of this endangered species and key part of Oregon's wildlife heritage. Click here to read a joint statement by the Sierra Club and Oregon Wild, which was published in the Oregonian last week.

After years of claiming liquefied natural gas (LNG) import was their plan, the developers of the proposed Jordan Cove LNG proposal and associated 230-mile gas pipeline have formally applied for federal LNG export licenses. Click here to learn more!

Exporting domestic gas supplies from Oregon will undermine US energy independence, increase energy costs for famillies and businesses, and harm landowners, fish, wildlife, old growth forests and rivers along pipeline routes.

Please send an email to Governor Kitzhaber and the Oregon Department of State Lands (DSL) asking them to deny all state permit applications needed for the Jordan Cove LNG project and other potential export proposals.
