SAN FRANCISCO – The Sierra Club Foundation is pleased to announce that Mike Richter, environmental entrepreneur and famed hockey goaltender, is the newest member of the Board of Directors. Richter has shown tremendous commitment to the Sierra Club’s mission, attending and participating as a spokesperson at Sierra Club rallies, meetings, outings and events.

Following a successful career with the NHL and the New York Rangers, Richter turned his attention to green entrepreneurship, focusing on renewable and clean energy technologies.  In his new role on the Foundation’s Board of Directors, Richter will help amplify outreach, advocacy and fundraising efforts in the New York City area, in addition to participating at the board committee level.

“Mike’s Foundation support and presence at events has been incredible,” said Foundation Executive Director Peter Martin. “In his new role, we’re looking to Mike to take our advocacy and outreach in the New York area to the next level.  Also, we’re looking forward to working with Mike in fostering stronger ties with the sports world.”

Richter has been instrumental in the Foundation’s efforts to connect with professional athletes, as evidenced by his help organizing a tour with players from the NHL and NFL of the Gulf during the BP oil disaster last year to raise awareness of the devastation.

“I’m overjoyed that my success in the NHL, my experience in green business ventures and my commitment to the environment is intersecting in a venue where I can add a fresh perspective,” said Mike Richter. “For years I’ve supported the Sierra Club’s mission to explore, enjoy and protect the planet, and it is with great pleasure that I accept a position on the Foundation’s Board of Directors.”

Following a successful 15-year career in the NHL as a goaltender with the New York Rangers, including a 1994 Stanley Cup Championship, Richter was inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame in 2008.  Richter is a partner at Healthy Planet Partners, a project finance fund which finances and manages the deployment of renewable energy technologies and energy saving retrofits for sports facilities. A Sierra Club member since 2009, Richter is also a member of the Sierra Club National Advancement Council.
