NO LNG OR COAL EXPORT IN COOS BAY! Over the next few days, the Oregon Department of State Lands is poised to make a decision on a dredging permit for the Port of Coos Bay that could lead to the development of an Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) or coal export terminal. This permit was initially sought for LNG import, but LNG companies have now changed their plans in order to export domestic gas. Meanwhile, the Port of Coos Bay is in confidential discussions with a company seeking to export 6 to 10 million tons of coal as well. Please click here to send Governor Kitzhaber and the Department of State Lands an email today and urge them to deny the dredging permit for Coos Bay and protect Oregon from coal and LNG exports. |

PROTECT WESTERN OREGON FORESTS! Oregon Congressmen Greg Walden, Peter DeFazio, and Kurt Schrader recently announced they will unveil legislation that would affect over 2 million acres of western Oregon BLM forests. While details of the legislation are sketchy, the Congressmen are hoping to generate logging revenue to fund county governments through increased clearcutting and defacto privatization of roughly half these forests, while extending some new protections for older forests. This legislation could mean dirtier water, damaged salmon runs, reduced recreational opportunities, and continued uncertainty in county funding. Congress should provide counties with secure annual funding, and should pass legislation protecting older forests and special places on public lands - but should not tie these efforts to increased clearcutting. OREGON'S ENVIRONMENT: A YEAR IN REVIEW! 2011 was a great year for the environment in Oregon, and the Sierra Club played BIG role in a number of key victories! We brought an end to an era of burning coal for electricty in Oregon. We helped homeowners across the state invest in rooftop solar and energy efficiency projects. We stopped the development of liquefied natural gas facilities and pipelines along Oregon's coast. We held the line during a challenging state legislative session– fighting to protect Oregon’s wolves and advance energy efficiency programs that will create jobs and save money for schools. And, we led the fight against efforts to ramp up unsustainable logging on our state lands. Click here for a look back at a few of our key success from the past year! |
