Dear
Fellow Sierran
Here's what's in this week's edition of CoolCATs Weekly:
1) Welcome to the 2012 General Assembly
2) Complete Streets Rolling On
3) Capitalism vs. The Climate
1) Welcome to the 2012 General Assembly
|
Happy New Year! The general assembly is back in session, and CoolCATs is back to keep you up to date. It's going to be a busy environmental year at the Statehouse, as a number of issues were left unaddressed by the 2011 session. The first priority is going to be fixing RIPTA's broken funding mechanism. Producer responsibility, energy independence, and complete streets will also get a lot of attention.
Welcome your legislators back to their jobs with a letter in support of RIPTA (it's a new version, if you already sent one), and more importantly tell your friends to write one, too.

2) Complete Streets Rolling On
|
On Thursday, Providence joined the growing list of cities and towns in RI that have passed complete streets resolutions. With seven municipalities now on board and five more considering resolutions, there is a lot of momentum behind the drive to bring walkable/bikeable communities to life. As previously mentioned, it's sure to be a hot topic in the general assembly as well. Can you help by getting a resolution passed in your town? Send me an email if you'd like a resolution template to pass on to your local councilperson.

3) Capitalism vs. The Climate
|
Naomi Klein has penned a fantastic post that argues the fight against climate change must be a central component on any initiative to reform our economic system. If you have a few extra minutes, I highly recommend the read.
