From the time it is mined to when it is burned in over 500 power plants nationwide, coal leaves a path of pollution and destruction in its wake that  damages public health, tears up the land, pollutes our waters, devastates communities and makes global warming worse. A new report just released by the Sierra Club, documents the devastating impacts of our nation's dependence on coal. The report, The Dirty Truth About Coal: Why Yesterday's Technology Should Not Be Part of Tomorrow's Energy Future, details the serious societal, economic and environmental tolls of coal. 

Learn the true cost of our dependence on coal and what we can do to lessen it.



(2) Malibu: City Honors Sierra Club Activist

Protect our CoastThe city of Malibu issued a special commendation today to Sierra Club activist Owen Bailey for his work to protect California's coast. Bailey, along with a diverse coalition of Latino organizations, business leaders, organized labor and community groups worked for over three years to keep a liquefied natural gas terminal off California's coast. The hugely successful effort mobilized more than two thousand people.

(3) Take Action: Put America on the Path Towards Curbing Global Warming

CAFE Standards

The House Energy and Commerce committee will vote later this month on a summer energy bill, and we need you to call committee members and urge them to support increases in CAFE standards and implement a national renewable energy standard!.

Call your Senators and demand a meaningful stand on energy.

The U.S. House of Representatives will vote on an energy bill in the next few weeks, and we need you to urge your Representative to support increasing fuel economy standards and implementing a national Renewable Energy Standard.  Don't wait!

Get involved and urge your Representative to support meaningful increases in fuel economy standards and a national renewable energy standard!
