Take Action: Keep Our Rivers Scenic and Wild
Legislators from Minnesota and Wisconsin are pushing a radical bill that would facilitate the construction of a $700 million bridge over a protected river. In fact, the bill would set a never-before-seen precedent, as such a highway has never been allowed over a congressionally designated wild and scenic river. Please urge your representative to oppose this bill. |

Take Action: Don't Drill to Drive
This week Congress will move forward with transportation bills that would fund our nation's roads, bridges, and transit systems in the coming years. This is an opportunity to reduce our dependence on oil by building safe, convenient transportation options like transit, biking, and walking, while improving the system we have. However, some in Congress have pushed to cut funding for transportation choices such as biking and walking and to tie funding for public transit to oil drilling on public lands, even in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and off the Florida coast. Tell your members of Congress to build a 21st-century transportation system that reduces our oil dependence, not expand oil drilling to pay for new and unnecessary highways. |

Grassroots Activism: Natural Gas in New York
Sierra Club Conservation Director Sarah Hodgdon used her column this week to profile two New York activists working on natural gas issues especially how it relates to water contaminated by fracking. "We're blessed here," says Chris Burger of the Sierra Club's Atlantic Chapter. "You can build a home, drill down 100 feet or so, and get plenty of water to live on. But private wells are very vulnerable to contamination by drilling. Once they're contaminated, you're out of luck, and your house becomes worthless." |
