Sierra Club Statement on Mitt Romney’s Pro-Drilling Speech in
Virginia
Richmond, VA – Today,
Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney delivered a speech in Virginia
demanding that oil companies be given open access to waters off the state’s beaches
for dangerous off-shore drilling operations.
Sierra Club’s National Political Director Tony
Cani Released the Following Statement in Response:
“Just days after the
two-year anniversary of the BP catastrophe that destroyed a coastal economy and
the livelihoods of tens of thousands of Americans, Mitt Romney wants to bring
the threat of an oil disaster to Virginia’s shores.
The danger of a spill
is all too real and the cost to the Commonwealth would be devastating. Romney
is willing to sacrifice Virginia’s beautiful beaches, hundreds of thousands of
tourism and fishing jobs, and more than $5 billion in annual economic activity
along the coast to help line the pockets of a handful of big oil billionaires.
Domestic oil
production is already at an all-time high while the largest oil companies are
raking in massive profits – yet Romney is willing to sacrifice anything to help
his buddies at Exxon and BP get even more. Big oil companies are spending
unprecedented amounts to elect Mitt Romney because they know he’ll put their
agenda before the needs of American families. Today, that should be clear to
all Virginians.”
