Republican leadership is giving into developers, mining companies, and polluters by steam-rolling protections for our waters, endangering all of our communities. The House will take up a spending bill, called the Energy and Water Appropriations Act (HR 5325), that contains an egregious attack on clean water. The bill overreaches by stopping the Army Corps of Engineers from placing safeguards on waters that act as flood controls, wildlife habitats, and drinking water sources.

Tell your representative to protect clean water and strip this reckless provision from the bill today!

Critics and pro-polluter forces in Congress falsely claim that light bulb efficiency standards, which require new light bulbs to use 25 to 30 percent less energy than traditional bulbs, will limit consumer choice by outlawing the incandescent bulb. That's false.

Improved incandescent bulbs are still for sale alongside compact fluorescent light bulbs and light-emitting diode bulbs, which provide even greater cost and energy savings. We expect Representative Burgess to introduce a rider to the Energy and Water appropriations bill that would prevent the Department of Energy from enforcing these important standards. This rider would jeopardize the benefits of these energy efficient standards, including approximately $100 in annual savings for the average American family.

Tell your representative that we need light bulb efficiency standards!

As we said last week, May is National Bike Month! The best way to break our addiction to oil is to use less of it. Will you pledge to ride your bike this month, and let us know how many trips you can take?

To help rally support for safer biking infrastructure, we'll send decision-makers a map of where and how much Sierra Club supporters across the country are cycling.

The Department of Interior and Dr. Jill Biden today announced plans to offer free National Parks and Federal recreation lands passes to active duty service members and their families. Beginning on Armed Forces Day, the passes will be valid on all public lands.

"The Sierra Club applauds the Obama administration for giving service members and their families free access to our National Parks and public lands," said Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club.
