Sierra
Club Statement on House GOP Dirty Energy Agenda
Washington, D.C. – Today, House Republicans released their
so-called “energy plan” – a reckless agenda to gut the clean air safeguards
that keep millions of American children healthy, curtail critical
environmental review of major infrastructure projects, and fork over more
public lands and tax subsidies to Big Oil companies already raking in billions
in profits every year.
In
response, the Sierra Club released the following statement from Associate
Director for National Campaigns, Melinda Pierce:
“It’s hardly surprising that John Boehner, Eric Cantor, Fred
Upton, and the rest of the House Republican leadership are pushing gimmicks
that would boost the boundless profits of the Big Oil and Big Coal lobbyists to
whom they are beholden. It’s nothing new – their number one priority for the
last two years has been waging war on the EPA’s life-saving public health
protections solely to promote the agenda of their big polluting campaign
contributors. Yet, the vast majority of Americans and even Republican voters
support the EPA’s work and believe that EPA - not Congress - should protect
them and their families from dangerous pollution. Elected officials
are supposed to represent the people of their districts, not the corporations
that stuff money in their pockets -- but this legislation shows House
Republicans will tirelessly rehash ways to put the agenda of big polluters
before the needs of their constituents.”
