Dear
Fellow Sierran
Here's what's in this week's edition of CoolCATs Weekly:
1) Hooray Complete Streets!
2) Budgetary Disappointment
3) Netroots: In The House
1) Hooray Complete Streets!
|
After a strong coalition campaign featuring coordination with both municipal and state agencies and a lot of grassroots community involvement, Complete Streets is on track to becoming law in Rhode Island. The bill finally passed out of committee on Wednesday, and it will be voted on this week on the House Floor. Once it passes there, it'll be on to the Governor's desk! Now, it will be up to communities and concerned community groups to make sure DOT is holding to the law.

2) Budgetary Disappointment
|
There was no last minute stay for RIPTA in the budget debate late last week. I have talked to numerous legislators who say they are still determined not to have service cut hearings this year, but time is quickly running out for them to do anything to stop them. Clearly, we will not be seeing the sustainable financing mechanism we need, but there may still be a glimmer of hope for getting a one time infusion of cash. It would be smart policy and certainly in keeping with the Governor's request that the legislature spend the budget surplus on encouraging economic development. Again, please take a moment to send a letter to your Reps and Governor. Please also call them, you can find their numbers here (Senators) and here (Representatives).

3) Netroots: In The House
|
I had a great time talking to folks at Netroots Nation, and you can see the panel I was a part of here. It was a good chance to recharge the emotional batteries after some exhausting weeks. I recommend attending one of these conventions if you can fit it into your schedule. Next year's has already been scheduled to happen in San Diego, June 20-23. I know it's a long time and a long way away, but by planning ahead you can get the best deal. For more information, visit the website.
