Soot causes respiratory ailments, heart attacks, premature deaths, and a wide range of other serious health problems. But existing safeguards against deadly soot pollution have been shown to be inadequate for communities living in the shadow of coal-fired power plants.
Now the Environmental Protection Agency has the opportunity to update those protections and make them meaningful. A proposed clean-air safeguard for soot could help millions of Americans breathe easier every year.

Grassroots Activism: Floating Beyond Coal in North Carolina
The many activists of Asheville Beyond Coal are celebrating a successful "float beyond coal" event this month. They gathered more than 30 kayaks and canoes for a great photo op on Lake Julian in front of the Asheville coal plant.
The flotilla was part of a recent push to educate Asheville residents on why the town needs to move beyond coal and invest in clean energy.
