Sierra Club Statement on Passage of Udall Amendment to Ensure Military
Can Invest in Next Generation of Biofuels
(Washington, DC) – Today, by a bipartisan vote of 62-37, the Senate passed an amendment sponsored by Senator Mark Udall (D-CO) to strike measures in the National Defense Authorization Act that sought to block the military from purchasing cleaner advanced biofuels.
Sierra Club Associate Director for National Campaigns Melinda Pierce
released the following statement in response:
“The Sierra Club applauds Senator Udall for standing up to stop this latest attempt to put oil industry profits before the needs of our military. Our Department of Defense is leading the way in deploying clean energy solutions with their "great green fleet." By investing in the next generation of biofuels, the Pentagon is increasing America's energy security. These innovative climate solutions not only reduce pollution, but also protect our troops while freeing us
from dependence on a fuel source largely controlled by hostile nations.
We urge the House to adopt the Senate's bipartisan position by ultimately approving a final Defense package that does not tie the hands of our armed forces and ensures military leaders can make the strategic choices they deem necessary.”
